Benjamin Brandreth (1809-1880) – an innovative marketer using mass advertising to build brand awareness for his “purifying” pills. The prevailing sentiment at the time was that the cleansing of the blood and bowels was the answer to avoiding disease and growing old. Brandreth’s Pills were so popular during the mid 1800’s they received mention in Herman Melville’s classic Moby-Dick and Poe wrote a short story in which the lead character wondered about the product’s ingredients.
