Beautifully handwritten remedy book by Thomas Henry Patterson (1840-1919), former surgeon turned pharmacist – 1866. Patterson was a member of the Union Army (acting surgeon-in-chief of the Second Military Division of Georgia), helped establish the Illinois College of Pharmacy (which later became part of Northwestern University), President of the Chicago College of Pharmacy, and officer of the State Pharmaceutical Association. Title page: “Receipt Book”, Chicago, March 1st 1866. One-third of the way through, on page 89, Patterson added a title-page in large letters: “Bliss & Sharp’s Formula Chicago, Feb. 1st, ’69”, surrounded by a ornate floral wreath. Bliss & Sharp was the largest retail drug firm in the late 1860’s. Recipes and remedies include Fire Works, Root Beer, Ginger Syrup, Cough Remedies, Invisible Ink, Strychnia, etc. Boards rubbed, spine missing, interior pleasantly crisp and clean. Orig. red morocco.
