In Celebration of the 4th of July. Norddeutsche Lloyd Shipping Co. 23 x 15.5 cm. Dinner Menu for German ocean liner, S. S. “Europa”, Tourist Class, Monday, July 4th, 1932. In both English and German. Europa was built in 1929 with a high speed steam turbine engine which gave it a cruising speed of 27.5 knots, allowing an Atlantic crossing time of 5 days. Taken as a US war prize on May 8, 1945, it was used to bring American troops home from the port of Southampton, England. Menu’s cover has illustrated picture of George Washington with an inset illustration of Washington’s Birth-Place. Menu: Table Celery, Spanish Olives, Soup President Grant, Boiled Kennebec Salmon-Sauce Hollandaise, Boiled New Potatoes, Roast Turkey, Cranberry Sauce, Lettuce Salad-St. Regis Dressing, Asparagus en Branches-Drawn Butter, Broiled Tomato, Sliced New Beans, Boiled Rice, Potatoes: Baked Idaho, Mashed, Demidoff. Savarin with Rum Fruits, Vanilla and Lemon Ice Cream, Sponge Pastry, Assorted Fruit, Coffee. For Children: Omelette aux Confitures. 9:30 p.m. to Order: Tea-Sandwiches. “Passengers are kindly requested not to smoke in the Dining Room during meals.” Heavy cardboard cover with paper menu, Red-White-Blue tassel.
