Being A Description of the Manners and Customs of the most Eminent Publick Houses, in and about the Cities of London and Westminster. London: T. Bickerston, c. 1866. 56 & 48 pages. 23 x 15 cm. "Malt-Worms", the slang term for beer drinkers used in the title of this extremely interesting volume, reminds us that not much has changed in the 150-or-so years since its publication. ("Hop-Heads" comes to mind as a term for beer geeks still in use today.) Originally printed in the early 1700's, this reprint from the 1860's is a guide to the public houses of various areas of London, as well as the kinds of beers they served and the sorts of people that frequented them. Wood cut images accompany each verse. 2 cm. loss to top of last three pages of second part not affecting text. Orig. purple boards, title in gilt to spine. Very good. Hardcover.
